Frozen in Time: Italian Mayor Apologizes for Pavarotti Statue Stuck in Ice Rink
An Italian mayor has issued an apology to the family of the legendary opera singer Luciano Pavarotti after a Christmas ice rink entrapped a statue of him, inviting skaters to "give him a high five".
The life-size bronze statue, depicting Pavarotti in a tuxedo with his arms outstretched and holding a handkerchief, was unveiled last year in the heart of Pesaro, a coastal city in the Marche region. The statue was intended as a tribute to the late tenor, who had a home and honorary citizenship in the city, as well as a nod to the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, who was also born in Pesaro.
However, the statue's placement next to a "very ugly" ice rink has sparked controversy. Nicoletta Mantovani, the tenor's widow, expressed her disappointment, anger, and upset after images of the statue "trapped" up to its knees were shared online. She stated that the city's decision to surround the statue with the ice rink had "ridiculed" her husband's memory and affected his image and the respect he deserved.
The mayor of Pesaro, Andrea Biancini, initially shared an image of the statue in the ice rink, encouraging skaters to "give Pavarotti a high five". This move only added to the controversy, as it seemed to mock the situation. Biancini later apologized, acknowledging that the local council had made a mistake and that there was no intention of disrespecting Pavarotti.
Despite the apology, the statue's placement remains a challenge. With the festive feature set to open this weekend, it is not possible to dismantle the ice rink without causing damage or incurring significant costs. The statue now finds itself stuck between the guardrails and Christmas lights, much like a stage character who has fallen into the wrong place and is now directing the traffic of skaters.
